Í kjölfar efnahagshrunsins í október 2008 flutti aukinn fjöldi Íslendinga til Noregs í atvinnuleit. Markmið doktorsrannsóknarinnar var að skoða upplifun þessa íslenska hóps í Noregi, með áherslu á hvernig kyn, kynþáttur, þjóðerni og stétt skarast þegar kemur að reynslu fólks á faraldsfæti.
Rannsóknin er framlag til fólksflutningarannsókna, sem hafa aðeins að takmörkuðu leyti skoðað flutninga fólks innan hins hnattræna Norðurs, og að varpa ljósi á og gagnrýna hvernig „innflytjandinn“ er settur fram í almennri og akademískri orðræðu. Niðurstöður rannsóknarinnar sýna að samanborið við marga aðra innflytjendur voru þátttakendur rannsóknarinnar í ákveðinni forréttindastöðu í Noregi vegna íslensks þjóðernis síns og hvítleika. Niðurstöðurnar beina líka athygli að þeim mun sem finna má innbyrðis á milli Íslendinganna og hvernig þeir voru í ólíkri stöðu með tilliti til kyns, stéttar og tungumálakunnáttu. Rannsóknin undirstrikar jafnframt hvernig notkun innflytjandahugtaksins er háð samhengi. Þannig sögðu þátttakendurnir gjarnan að þeir teldust ekki innflytjendur því þeir væru norrænir og hvítir, en það kom þó fyrir að þeir samsömuðu sig við þetta hugtak, sérstaklega í aðstæðum þar sem þeim fannst þeir hafa mætt neikvæðu viðmóti eða verið útilokaðir. Notkun þátttakenda á innflytjendahugtakinu undirstrikar því neikvæða merkingu þess og hvernig það er tengt við að vera í viðkvæmri stöðu.

Summary
In the aftermath of the financial crash that hit Iceland in October 2008, increased numbers of Icelanders migrated to seek employment in Norway. The project explored the experiences of these migrants in Norway in light of the economic crisis, emphasising the intersections of gender, race, nationality and class. The project contributes to the under-explored field of North-North migration and interrogates and problematises how ‘the migrant' is constructed in public and academic discourse. The findings show how positions of privilege and disadvantage intersect in the experiences of Icelandic migrants in Norway. Due to their Icelandic nationality and whiteness, the research participants enjoyed a privileged position in Norway as compared to many other migrants. However, the findings also call attention to the dissimilarities amongst the Icelandic migrants and how they were differently positioned in terms of gender, class and language skills. The findings furthermore underscore how contextual the migrant category is: the research participants often declared that the immigrant term did not apply to them because they were Nordic and ‘white'. However, when they did identify with the migrant category, it was particularly in contexts where they felt excluded or mistreated. The participants' use of the term migrant thus highlights how the term has a negative meaning and is associated with being in a vulnerable position.
