The research project (2013-2015), Learning spaces for inclusion and social justice: Success stories from immigrant students and school communities in Iceland integrates four subthemes and main research areas: Experiences and aspirations of immigrant students; Teachers professional development, pedagogy and teaching practices; Leadership, collaboration and school cultures; and Policies and curricula.

Two main aims of the study were to: understand and learn from the experiences of immigrant students in Iceland who have succeeded academically and socially and to explore and understand how social justice is implemented in equitable and successful diverse school contexts and other learning spaces in Iceland.

The project has an interdisciplinary approach and applied qualitative and quantitative research methods. The findings shed light on a myriad of good practices according to socially and academically successful immigrant students; as reported by teachers, principals and parents; and as observed by the researchers. Success stories serve as strategies and new guidelines for teaching and school reform and are an important contribution to educational policy and teacher education. The findings thus benefit all participants in our research and contribute to inclusion and social justice in Iceland as well as providing a broad, innovative knowledge base and comparison for the international context.

Information on how the results will be applied

A Spinoff project funded by NordForsk will allow the research group to implement the findings to practitioners in schools on different levels. Seminars have already been organized in all participating countries where main results have been introduced to practitioners and courses provided based on the guidelines for school development which were developed by the research group.
