We researchers at the Center for System Biology in the University of Iceland, have formulated methods to computationally propose the functions of human genes and metabolites by analyzing them in the context of metabolism using genome scale metabolic network models.
The methods developed have led to the characterization of the function of selected proteins and. Examples include citrate, gluconate and glukonokinase metabolism. In particular, the study has highlighted that the metabolism of compounds that are commonly used in pharma and the food industry is often not understood on the systems level.
Ultimately our findings contribute to the basic understanding of human metabolism by expanding the knowledge of the biochemical reactions required to sustain life. The results may therefore contribute to the understanding the molecular mechanisms that underlie cellular function and disease.
