The project focused on children with diverse background and their transitions from preschool to primary school in Iceland. Multiple perspectives were sought.
One part of the project
focused on the views and experiences of the children themselves. Another part focused on the
parents, their perspectives and expectations. The third part was an action research study where
the researcher (Ph.D student) worked with educators in preschool and primary school for a
period of one year with the aim of creating continuity in children’s education.
The study has been presented widely at educational conferences, in professional academic journals and in an Icelandic book on the education of young children. The findings from the study have also influenced policy making for children with diverse background. The principal investigator was the chair of a committee at the Ministry of Education and Science where the findings from the study had influence. Two doctoral dissertations will come from the study. One of them is almost finished, Björn R. Egilsson will defend his thesis in the spring. The other (the
action research) was delayed because of Covid. However, the student Friðborg Jónsdóttir has
already submitted two journal articles. The findings from the study will be used in the teacher
education, since all the researchers are teaching in the Faculity of Education and Pedagogy at
the University of Iceland. The study was closely connected with a NordForsk funded study on
belonging and therefore the findings will be easily accessible for international audiences as
well.
